Divided Allegiance is the second book following Paks. In this novel she breaks away from the mercenary company and trys to find her own way. The first third of the book was interesting. This section of the book felt more personal than the first book did, probably because it felt less choppy.

Positives:
+ Paks is on a journey of learning. Just because she spent 3+ years becoming a great swordsman doesn't mean she knows everything. And that is one of the things that this book does really, really, well. I enjoyed this 'learning adventure' instead of Paks being an invincible/infallible character.
+ The conflict scenes in this book are interesting and unique. This first one is probably the worst written.
+ That ending. Wow!

Negatives:
- I was really hoping that she would choose a different career path ~50% into the book. And her capitulation into that career path felt unrealistic. Why did she suddenly agree? It wasn't conveyed clearly.
- I am still disappointed in the details. What happened to the Pony? The whole Halveric thing? Her distrust of elves? Why did they go on the quest if they were so short on men? Why did the dark elves did what they did?

What started off as well and enjoyable to read, quickly turned into one of those books I almost put down and stopped reading. My main issue here is with how the writer over drags the main character through the mud, with too many near-death experiences that it pulled me out of the story. It was almost like Elizabeth Moon is a closet sadist. I would only recommend it to get to the better 3rd book in the series.
The first volume of the Paksenarrion trilogy saw the young girl, Paksenarrion, seek her fortune as a mercenary soldier. She proved an apt pupil and was fortunate to work with an honorable company where she distinguished herself. Fantastical elements like elves, dwarves, mages and such were present in the first book but they were a very peripheral part. That changes in this, the second installment.

Paks has left the company of Duke Phelan. Although she loved the organization and the people, she could not handle the horrors of their last assignment. It went against her nature to protect. So it is that she is sent out on her own, with the Duke's blessing, to seek more training. She is welcome back at any time. Her travels expose her to the more magical elements of this realm and she continues to distinguish herself as she grow in experience, skill, and knowledge of herself. She does not seem to recognize just how remarkable she is but nobody is more please than she is when she is chosen for training as a paladin. Her training, however, exposes her to great evil and makes her vulnerable. The forces of evil wish to destroy her and her effectiveness. By the time she gets done with her quest, she is a very ill young lady indeed but her companions know that something more is in store. That will have to wait, however, for the next volume.

This is a very readable book. It is easy to like the characters and identify with them. It is well written and Elizabeth Moon shows a distinct talent for giving the reader just enough information to make one wonder at the grand scheme of things. She also leaves the explanations for a riper time. It works. It hooked me. I have to read the next book.
First book, GREAT! World building, character development, believability... wonderful. Second book, slow story build up, further development, further buy into the Paks as she goes off on an adventure, and BANG! She destroys everything you’ve come to love about the series and the character itself. Why would anyone buy the next book??

Horrible!
One of, if not the, first major fantasy story to feature a female hero... I have read the whole series multiple times. The first it was loaned to me by a friend who wanted to share. Then a few years later I hunted it down to buy so I could read it and keep a copy for myself. Then when I finished, I loaned my books out to another friend's daughter, because I wanted to share...
The Hero herself is never interested in sexual relations so other than brief mentions of subject it isn't an issue in the story. There are no explicit sex scenes; however, the hero is assaulted, beaten, and raped early in the stories. Though it isn't detailed, thankfully, as a sex scene might be, it is a subject matter that some may find difficult. For the hero it is one of several defining moments. The author, a woman, took great care to present a hard topic rarely truly included in such stories, and handled it in a way that benefit the story without making lite of the subject or being overly offensive. And that is only a chapter or two of the dozens that will entice and ensnare your mind in this series.
