I usually don't like to read books about the supernatural, but this book was suggested to me. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and sustained it all the way through. I liked that a music theme was incorporated throughout. I liked some of the characters, and the way the author wove past and present together -- in some other books i've had a hard time moving back and forth. I have never spent much time in the Pacific Northwest and enjoyed reading the story with this setting. My husband also read it, and we rarely like the same books, but he liked this one also. It was very engaging from the beginning; you don't have to wait to page 100 to be hooked! It was almost 400 pages, but it reads easily, and again, it holds your attention. My favorite characters were Owen, Barbara, and Maize. Read the book and see which ones you liked best!Product details

The Piper's Story is beautifully crafted. The characters are well-developed and believable. The action unfolds at just the right tempo, and the encounters with the supernatural entity are chilling. The historical and scientific research is fascinating and informative. All in all, a thoroughly delightful read. More, please!
I loved this book first of all because it captured my interest and held it. The story was unique, complex and compelling. I also enjoyed the very descriptive writing style. The location and characters were beautifully and fully realized, and I became caught up in the intensity of this supernatural drama. I would call this book a real "page-turner" - I was so invested in the story that I truly couldn't put it down.
This book was intriguing from the very beginning; not a book I would normally read but probably the most spell-binding I've read in a long time. Highly recommended!! Congratulations to Wendy on this great read!
Bergin's book draws the reader in with its prologue set at the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940, where Scottish bagpiper Ian MacGregor narrowly escapes an encounter with a supernatural being. Fifty-four years later in the Pacific Northwest, Ian's grandson Neal wrestles with his own demons as his new home unleashes terrifying visions and threatens to tear his family apart. The supernatural aspects are more suspenseful for their relationship with reality rather than otherworldliness, so the book will appeal to those who might not normally be attracted to this theme. Deftly weaving suspense, history, and humor, The Piper's Story is ultimately about how the forces of music, love, and family can combat the forces of evil.
I play bagpipes so the title caught my eye, The supernatural aspect of the story is carried off rather well. This was a big plus because I find too often supernatural stories fall flat. But within the over all story it works here. There are two real history events from WWII woven into the which are end noted. This gives the interested reader something new to pursue, For me this makes reading exciting.
The Piper's Story is a captivating page-turner that is sure to draw in all sorts of readers. Bergin's command of the three stated themes - war, music, and the supernatural - is considerable, and those who are interested in any of these subjects will find much to ponder; however, the book has much more to offer. To a certain degree, this is a novel of place, and Bergin writes beautifully about the Pacific Northwestern setting in which the action occurs. Another strength of the novel is its fast narrative pace. From the outset, the book is driven by action, and the plot builds in intensity to a thrilling climax. The dynamics of family are also an important theme in the work, and the interactions of the characters are decidedly realistic, sometimes painfully so. Finally, the book's most compelling and important subject is its treatment of good and evil. For Bergin, hope is clearly a virtue, and her bold convictions about the banality of evil and the triumph of good are a balm to the world-weary soul.
