Wow! I am a historical fiction fan, but even so this is one of the best novels in the genre that I have read. I just finished it and I am blown away - this book managed to pull up so many strong, swirling emotions for me. I can't shake the images and sensations of this read. It gave me a wonderful glimpse into that time period!
To be perfectly fair, I will say that there were parts of the story telling that ran slow at times. So I do agree that in a perfect editing world, the book could maybe have done with trimming down some to hold the tension tighter. HOWEVER... In my opinion it's not enough to detract from the overall excellence of this novel. It has enough good in it that I could easily stick with it even if it wasn't non stop action, all the time.
I think the character development in this novel, especially the farther you go into it and as the 'years' go by, is one of the strengths. The Romanovs were real people of course, and it is difficult to portray them in fictional literature. But Ms. Mossanen seems to handle that well. I had a good grasp of Alexandra and Nicholas' personalities and struggles, I wanted to tousle Alexei's hair, I wanted to be swept up in Avram's arms. They came across as very real and easy to connect with.
Another great strength of this book is the use of imagery and all five senses, especially the use of scent and smell descriptions, which is unusual. Every scene is desccribed so vividly and with its own unique scent. At the same time its never over done. She crafts her imagery very well, and as a reader I appreciate that. It really put me in the scenes and left me with some incredible 'memories' that I will treasure!
The plot has been covered well by other reviewers so I'll just state that it has plenty of twists and turns, a touch of the supernatural, and doesn't simply play out along the historical lines you think you know. It asks questions from angles you have not considered before (especially because the main character, who you will connect with and love, is not historical but a fictional amalgamation) and weaves new threads into the cloth. It's a fresh take on the story.
I'm extremely glad I read this book. It was like an amazing dream!

The Last Romanov Dora Levy Mossanen 9781402265945 Books Reviews

I enjoyed this book. I loved the magic that the author inserted in the storyline as she has done with other books. For me, this book did not entice me in the same way as Harem. It is worth reading, but again, it does not equal the pleasure and entertainment derived from Harem. I look forward to eventually reading her newer book about Iran.
Because I am familiar with the history of the time, this is definitely a novel but it is a good read. If you are enamored of this period of Russian history you will likley enjoy what this author has written. I am not familiar with some of the animals or herbs that she includes in this work so I was confused with some of the terminoliogy. The author uses enough of real characters to make the work plausible and this adds to the enjoyment.
A celebration of beauty and art weaved masterfully into a historical tale of great interest.

This story affords an intimate glimpse in the lives of the Romanovs and their chilling end. The novel's grandeur and opulent expression seemed to me to be a metaphor for the main character's refusal to discard her dignity and monarchist hopes following the Russian revolution. I found it effective and always artfully constructed.

I enjoyed this novel and was grateful for the author's evocative depiction of Rasputin. He really did come alive for me and the macabre circumstances of his death constituted one of the more gripping passages in the novel.
I loved the book ! The details and descriptions were very good. The author had really done her research, and I learned much about the time and conditions of the Russian Aristocracy. The characters became friends as I journeyed through their lives. This gave me a view of the family through the eyes of a family member. What a life she had ! The ending was very satisfying.

I loved it so much that I bought a copy to give to my daughter for her 50th birthday. She'll love it, too !! The only drawback I've found to my (which I also love) is that I can't loan my copy of the book to a friend. So, I buy them one on .
A first read for a novel about the end of the Romanov dynasty, I was connected with the main character's struggle from childhood through adulthood. Darya's devotion to the Tsarvich's survival and her loyalty to the Romanov's compels a reader into a fantasy world of mysticism, hope and endurance during a period of Russian history you wish would have concluded differently. I dont necessarily agree with some of the other reviewers criticism on the accuracy for some of the historical reference. I think it adds to the mysticism or the fantasy as opposed to the validity of the writing. It is fiction mixed with some historical facts. I would recommend to place it on your list of reading materials for Russian fictional novels. The chapter where the Romanov's battle to survival is extinguished is quite moving and extremely sad. I would have been happy with the absent of the last chapter though.
The characters are not likeable, some not even believable, editing mistakes and filler nonsense easily sum up this book. All of that make it a hard one to read. It's a slow moving story, I struggled through in the hopes it would pick up the pace but when I finally reached the end it was still slow. I won't be able to recommend this one to anyone.
